Catholic Worker is an organization at St. John’s Prep based on the life and teachings of Dorothy Day. Ms. Day was a New Yorker who during the Great Depression opened houses of hospitality to feed the hungry, clothe the naked and give shelter to the homeless. 

 

Dorothy Day is one of four Americans that Pope Francis held up as worthy of imitation in his 2015 address to Congress. Her example has inspired thousands of adults—Catholic and otherwise—to carry on her commitment to the corporeal Works of Mercy, peace, and social justice.

The primary purpose of the Catholic Worker club at St. John’s Prep is preparing dinner twice a month for a local homeless shelter. All cooking takes place in the school’s home economics room under adult supervision. Meals are donated to guests of the Immaculate Conception homeless shelter in Astoria. Since the shelter does not open until 7pm, the club does not meet until 4:00pm.  Students in all grades are welcome to join The Catholic Worker Club at any time.
