The Test for Admission into Catholic Schools (TACHS Exam) (November)

As part of the application process, all students applying to St. John's Prep are required to take the TACHS exam. Please note that this is an online exam taken at home with a laptop or computer. When registering for the exam, please list St. John's Prep as one of your three choices and include our code: 020. We consider a range of factors, including your performance on the TACHS exam (focusing on the top 15th percentile), as well as your elementary GPA (with a strong emphasis on core subjects in the high 80s). While all choices are considered, priority is given to students who place St. John's Prep as their first choice on the TACHS.

St. John's Prep TACHS Prep Course (September)
Prepare for success with St. John’s Prep’s TACHS Prep Course! Our comprehensive program is designed to help 8th-grade students excel on the Test for Admission into Catholic High Schools (TACHS). Through careful instruction, targeted practice, and test-taking strategies, students will build confidence and strengthen their skills in math, reading, and language arts. This course begins in September and runs on Saturdays from 9AM-11:30AM.

Report Cards

As part of the application process, all prospective students must submit their report cards from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. Admission decisions are based on a combination of these report cards, which should reflect strong academic performance, and the results of the TACHS exam. Together, these factors help us assess each student’s readiness and fit for St. John’s Prep.

Scholarship Exam (December)

The Vallone Scholarship Exam offers 8th graders the chance to earn an academic scholarship to St. John's Prep. Students who take the exam will be considered for full, half, or partial scholarships based on their performance. Please note that full scholarships are reserved for students who place St. John's Prep as their first choice on the TACHS exam. This is a great opportunity to demonstrate your academic abilities and potentially receive financial support for your high school education.

(January-May)

St. John’s Prep’s Admissions Committee reviews each applicant’s entrance scores in combination with seventh and eighth grade report card grades. Decisions are mailed and emailed in mid-January. Scholarship recipients are also notified at this time.
