French Culture Club

The French Club is open to any student interested in France and French culture, regardless of his or her previous knowledge. Students explore the many facets of French culture through music, food, film, and field trips. New members are welcome and encouraged to join at any time.

Recently, the French Culture Club and Italian Culture Club took a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We visited the Greek and Roman Galleries and enjoyed looking at the statuary and various objects from antiquity. After the museum, we enjoyed some lovely pastries at a Belgian cafe. It was a wonderful outing to the city!
Past Activities

In the past, members have viewed French news, listened to the music of French artists Jacque Brel, Barbara, and George Brassens, and critiqued French films such as Au Revoir Les Enfants, The Hypothesis of the Stolen Painting, To Be and to Have, East-West, and L’Argent de Poche. Students have also created reproductions of the famous Tin Tin cartoon after watching a documentary about the French cartoonist Herge.
The French Culture Club has also hosted several food tastings in which students sampled delicious cheeses and various other edibles. On Valentine’s Day, students enjoyed sumptuous French chocolates. Members of the French Club have also ventured outside the walls of St. John’s Prep to visit places like the Jewish Museum for a tour of a Camille Pissaro exhibition. Students supplemented this experience by creating their own landscapes and visiting a Belgian café in Manhattan. The French Club has also visited Harlem’s Studio Museum to tour and workshop in connection with Flow, an exhibition of new work by emerging artists who are either from Africa or born of African parents.
