St. John's Prep Reunion of the Classes of 1985, 1990 and 2000
An extremely enthusiastic group of alumni attended the reunion on March 13, 2010. With the help of Facebook, alumni all over the world were aware of the event. Traveling from near, Astoria, and far, California, the members of the classes of 1985, 1990 and 2000 were delighted to see old friends and former teachers once again. They had such a great time that members of the Class of 1985 are already planning their next reunion to be held at Astoria Park in June. Here is just one of the St. John’s Prep memories posted by alumni:
My fondest memories of St. John's are the friendships that were made, some even continuing to this day. I also can't forget to mention that I married my best friend from SJP, Sam Sultana. We are currently married for 13 years, and have 3 beautiful children. ~Joanne D’Errico Sultana ’90
Please contact Rosanne De Joseph Vogel at sjpalumni@stjohnsprepschool if you are interested in attending a future reunion.

SJP Class of '59 Reunion
On Saturday, November 21, 2009 Alumni of St. John's Preparatory School held their Annual Reunion at the New York Athletic Club in New York City. The classes of '49, '59, and '69 were honored this year. The evening began with a mass, celebrating the feast of Christ the King, at which Reverend Joseph Daly, C.M. was the main celebrant. Concelebrants were Rev. John Freund, C.M.'55, Rev. Msgr. David Cassato, '64, Rev. Loius Trotta, C.M. and Rev. Bernard Tracey, C.M. '63. Following the mass, guests had the opportunity to mingle with classmates and faculty during the cocktail hour. Following the cocktail hour, Principal William Higgins formally welcomed those gathered and invited the crowd to join together to sing "God Bless America which was followed by the 50th Anniversary Class of 1959 leading the crowd in singing a stirring version of the St. John's Prep school song, complete with the foot-stomping to correspond to the words "Fight, Fight, Fight."
The evening’s St. Vincent de Paul Honorees were Mario Cuomo ’49 and Joseph Mattone, Sr. ’49. The St. John the Baptist Honorees were Mario Fichera ’59, John Houston’69 and Christopher and Mary Pia ’84.
The evening was a warm and friendly gathering of those who shared a special experience at St. John's Prep in Brooklyn and Astoria. The Prep is still a vital institution providing a quality Catholic education in its new location, Astoria, Queens. Prep alumni who attended the Brooklyn institution are welcome to visit and see the "New" St. John's Prep.
Mater Christi Alumni Reunion
On Saturday, September 26, 2009, members of the Mater Christi High School Classes of 1969, 1974 and 1979 celebrated 40, 35 and 30 years since their graduations joined by friends and family members from other classes. The reunion was held at St. John’s Prep, formerly Mater Christi, in Astoria.
The Class of 1969 is a group who bonded because of the dramatic and historical events that took place during their senior year and the seasons that followed. It was the year of Superbowl III in which the New York Jets beat the Baltimore Colts and the Game MVP was the Jets quarterback Joe Namath, Men landed on the moon, the Woodstock concert took place and the Mets won the World Series. Members of the Class of 1969 had their personal memories of that year.
The class of 1974 celebrated 35 years since graduation. Their class members remembered that their class was the last co-educational class to graduate from Mater Christi. Kathleen (Kitty) Prager is a member of that class and is now English Department Chair at St. John’s Prep. Her fond memories of the Sisters of Mercy who taught the Mater Christi girls led her to begin “Project Mercy” a campaign to raise funds for students in need in honor of the Sisters of Mercy.
The Class of 1979 had Barbara Mock Autrey, now living in California, who started a Mater Christi Class of 1979 30th reunion Facebook page. This page reconnected classmates and led to a large number of the class attending the reunion. Joe Reda ’79 produced a moving video for his class. 1979 was also the year that Mater Christi students performed “Godspell” under the direction of Jack McGuiness, a member of the class of 1967. The cast, which consisted of students from various classes, met to practice before the reunion and performed a medley of songs from “Godspell” to the delight of the reunion attendees. It was a wonderful evening for everyone
A reunion of the classes of 1965, 1970, 1975 and 1980 is scheduled for October 2, 2010 at the school. Please contact sjpalumni@stjohnsprepschool.org if you are interested in contacting classmates about the upcoming reunion.
