Academics
The goal of our academic program is to prepare our students today for the world of tomorrow. At the center of the Prep's philosophy is the Vincentian tradition of educating the mind and the heart. Our goal is always to help our students live the gospel message that "they may have life and have it more abundantly." John - 10:10.
Academic Philosophy
St. John's Preparatory School prepares its students for the nation's finest colleges and universities through a rigorous, traditional academic program. Its faculty has an average of 17 years of service to The Prep and several are alumni who have returned "home." Of the full-time faculty of approximately 70 men and women, over 91% hold masters degrees.
Graduation Requirements
To graduate from St. John's Preparatory School, a student must earn a minimum of 22 academic credits and must satisfy the State of New York Regents requirements.
Special Academic Opportunities
Once students pass the basic course requirements, they are encouraged to expand on their achievements through Advanced Placement courses and explore an exciting range of electives. Students interested in language and literature may choose from courses like The New York Story, Creative Writing, or Journalism, while students interested in social studies may select electives in law, psychology, sociology or 20th Century. Students serious about science may choose electives in Forensic Science, Human Health and Disease, Astronomy, Science and Technology, Human Anatomy and Physiology. Elective art classes include sculpture, painting and illustration while music electives offer both Band and chorus. Our Computer Science Department offers many exciting electives including Auto Cad and Advanced Auto Cad.
Advanced Placement courses are offered in all academic areas of study including history, English, science, language and mathematics.
St. John's University/St. John's Prep Baccalaureate Program
This unique program is designed for qualified students who desire to earn a high school diploma from St. John's Prep and a bachelor's degree from St. John's University in seven years. There are special benefits to this particular opportunity.
Students interested in this program are required to take their courses at levels 3 and/or 4 when courses are offered at more than one level of difficulty and to take the Regents Examinations in all required subjects. In the fourth year of the program, students attend the University and earn credit from both St. John's University and St. John's Prep.
